Perhaps only a weaver knows the feeling of sitting down at the loom in front of a newly tensioned warp with shuttle in hand. The cloth about to be woven may be destined for the kitchen table, the shoulders of a dear friend or the walls of an art gallery. In any case the thrill of possibility is the same. Thread upon thread, the cloth materializes as if by magic. Of course the weaver knows that it is through careful planning and the thoughtful, accumulated movement of hands and feet that the finished cloth arrives. 

Shuttles Thrown: 75 Years of Weaving in the Guild of Canadian Weavers brings together weaving from across the country. Members new and old have submitted their best work. Some have joined the GCW only this year while others have been members for several decades. The exhibition committee is thrilled to share each and every entry with our weaving community in this online exhibition. We are grateful to all members who have shared their weaving with us. Whether you weave for your family, livelihood or creative expression, your handwoven cloth is an expression of care and thoughtful attention. Your work in this exhibition demonstrates the ways in which our weaving community contributes to the fields of craft and art in Canada. We admire your creativity, artistry and technique and hope that this exhibition will inspire all of our members to explore at their looms with shuttle in hand.
