Olga Savovich

I am a 65 year old retired single female teacher. I find weaving both relaxing and challenging. It gives me great joy to share my creations with others.

My great grandmothers, grandmothers and my mother were involved with home textile industry in both Montenegro and Italy. The Montenegro side of the family were involved in raising sheep and spinning wool to make fabric. In Italy, embroidery, crochet and knitting were cultivated hobbies that provided a bit of extra income and relaxation from farm chores. It was a joy to produce useful and creative pieces.

My mother was an excellent knitter. I was introduced to four-shaft weaving on a table loom and floor loom by my sister Jelena Beeson who is a long time member of the Kamloops Arts and Crafts Club.

When I retired from teaching weaving was the hobby I returned to after many years. It was my father Djuro Savovich who made me my first little handloom at the age of nine and my brother Alexander Savovich made me my second one at the age of 60. I am so grateful to be healthy and able to learn about the craft of weaving. It connects me to so many people world wide. And it connects me to my historical roots.
