Mackenzie Kelly-Frère

I am an artist and educator living and working in Mohkinstsis (Calgary), Alberta in Treaty Seven Territory. I have taught weaving at the Alberta University of the arts since 2009. In 2020 I completed the Basic Test for the GCW Master Weaver program. I have been a member of the GCW since 2017 and have volunteered as Alberta Representative and Historian before taking on the role of President in 2022.

In Lexical Fragments, mediated knit structure appears on the surface of the cloth as both image and texture. Ink applied to threads throughout the process reveals and/or interferes with the apprehension of row upon row of calligraphic, text-like marks. The translation from knit web to mesh of pixels, to interlaced threads in satin damask enacts a mimesis of text in textile form.
